I had a nice selection of four shots in last week’s paper, cCLIFF’S CARVES OUT A CHAMPIONSHIP. I had had a tough time shooting the previous week’s playoff game (see Summer Softball Playoffs) as the game started late. This time around, they played a double header and I had good tlight for the first game. Amred with good light and good karma, I came home with some good photos. PHOTOS BY TIM O’BRIEN Above, Cliff’s Meat Market’s Lucy Stephenson swings for the fence early in the first game of the hard-fought double-header Carrboro Co-Rec softball finals against Chapel Hill Air at Hank Anderson Park on Tuesday. Below, Chapel Hill Air’s Ed Sawyer takes a good cut during the first game. Cliff’s Meat Market went on to win both games to take the championship in the Carrboro Parks and Recreation league. Above was the lead photo for the story, catching a good hack at the ball early in the game. The photo below was cropped to the top half to catch the pitcher’s toss. Here I caught another swing with some decent movement of the ball. I like this shot, but it ended up as a tiny shot on the front [...]

A couple of weeks ago, I shot a local summer softball playoff game. A pair of images from the shoot made it to the paper in Five down, two left in Carrboro Co-Rec. Above, high fives and congratulations end the night after Cliff’s Meat Market won 13-12 over the Chapel Hill Realty Group at Carrboro’s Hank Anderson Park. Cliff”s hard-fought wins over Milltown and CHRG on Thursday sends it into the final. Below, CHRG’s Dave Shaw jumps on a pitch Thursday night. The game had a late start shortly after 8PM. So the light was poor from the start and just got worse. As usual it took me some time to get into the zone, wasting valuable light. Before I knew it, I was shooting at ISO 1600 and a shutter spped slower than 1/160th of a second. This makes taking action shots tough. Too slow to catch action, too slow to stop camera shake. Fortunately, I learned a bit about Lightroom’s grain reduction controls, though these did little more than take the edge off. I ended up get more decent shots of the team in grey, Cliff’s Meat Market. Unfortunately, Cliff’s won, meaning they would move on to the [...]

I have officially arrived! On Saturday, I received my first official press pass. It felt so cool. The pass let me into the restricted area around the field. Saturday night was the state championship game for mean’s high school lacrosse. The Chapel Hill Tigers lost 19-13 to the Charlotte Providence Panthers. As little as I know about lacrosse, it was an exciting game. The Panthers pulled ahead early in the first quarter. Chapel Hill fought back in the second quarter to tie the game 10-10 early in the third. Charlotte Providence then scored six unanswered goals and that was it. I shot well over two hundred photos, submitted fifteen to the paper and had two published with the story, Long live the Queen (City), yesterday. You can see the two photos online here. North Carolina high school lacrosse underwent a sea of change last weekend, as the last NCHSLA state championships both went to Charlotte schools. The sports page featured the following two shots. This one led the sports page, pasted across the top of the page. This one followed below to add some emotion. I will delve a bit into the challenges of shooting lacrosse in a later post. If [...]

I spent a good chunk of Friday evening covering a local high school lacrosse playoff game. The East Chapel Hill Wildacts beat Mt. Tabor in the end 9-7 as you can read in the accompanying arricle to these two images: Wildcats live to fight another day. The shoot presented some serious technical and personal challenges, so I thought the shoot was a bust until I saw the paper. Fortunately for East, its defense was up to the task Friday night. Despite lapses in man-up situations, East used defense to grind past Mount Tabor, 9-7, in the North Carolina High School Lacrosse Association quarterfinals. Despite grainy, dark images, the photos in the paper came out surprisingly nicely. I was stunned. I will go into the challenges in a later post with some of the outtakes. I needed an action shot where I could identify the player and this was it. I had a few nicer action shot, but could not figure out the player numbers. This image ended up taking up a good portion of the top half of the front of the sports seciton. I submitted this shot on a whim. I really like it, but did not think that [...]

The Chapel Hill News printed three of my photo today with the story, Do the math on UNC’s inttamural kickball tournament on Saturday. From the caption on the lead photo: Mean Machine’s Anderson Shore, a UNC freshman, pitches during a playoff win at UNC’s intramural kickball tournament Saturday on Hooker Fields. Kickball, a recreational throwback to the playground game you played when you were a schoolkid, has grown into an annual event on the Carolina campus calendar. I posted Kickball Outtakes a few days ago with some more photos from the day. The post alse talks a bit about the challenges I faced and the technical details. I looked for the safe shots first. So I took the first two shots of pitching and kicking pretty early. The team building exercise made for a fun ‘unexpected’ shot between the two rounds of play I stayed for. These las ttow were submitted to the paper, but not run. I like the first one a lot, but was leaving as I shot it. I did not stay to get caption info. That and having the main subject’s back to the camera probably shot this one down. The last shot was another safe, [...]

On Saturday, I spent an hour or so on UNC’s Hooker Field shooting the intramural kickball tournament. We should see the article tomorrow with the accompanying photos. The day was beautiful for the tournament with bright sunny skies and warm weather. I shot it in the early/mid afternoon, catching some pretty strong shadows. I thought about setting up an off camera flash, but was not sure how to set it up to fill properly with the action all over the place. In the first round of playoffs, there were four games going on, so I scouted for best lighting and tried to get some basic ‘sure’ shots. The light was strong, so I shot at ISO 100 and a shutter speed above 250. I used shutter spped priority, so I could focus on the action rather than the camera. I seitched from my longer to my shorter lens over the day to try to mix it up a bit. From there, I tried to get good shots of students kicking the ball. It was tough as home plate was only a reference point for kicking. Too much movement to get a good zoom in shot. Getting the timing right was [...]

I even had a couple of shots make it into the paper that Wednesday: tim in print | Carrboro Classic. The Carrboro Classic is a duathlon, sort of a triathlon without the swimming. Starting bright and early on Sunday morning, races in multiple categories began on the track at a local middle school. There were three courses, depending on the category, that wound through the neighborhood. Here are some action outtakes. As I noted in yesterday’s outtake post with racing outtakes, though I brought my Strobist gear (off-camera flash with stand), it was a bright and fluid day. So I either went ambient light only or with a fill flash (the on camera sb-400). There were a few points where runners and bikers came through. I could have set up the flash there, but was not inspired to do so. In general, I am bappy with the results. I am not sure how to set up a flash far enough away to not interfere with the race and still get enough light to matter on a bright day outside.
For every assignment that I shoot for the newspaper, I submit a series of pictures so the editors can choose what fits their needs the best. I always submit to many. For my recent assignment shoot the basketball game, I submitted seven though they only asked for five. I have a difficult time deciding which shots best capture spirit of the thing usually I have to narrow the field at least 200 pictures. From the seven pictures and submitted that weekend, the paper only ran one. I posted that picture that Sunday. I also posted a few other outtakes from that shoot that weekend. The photos here are the six shots rejected by the editors. I thought the image above did a reasonable job of capturing the feel of the game. The Wildcats won handily and held the lead from the beginning of the game. In this shot, we see a single Wildcat shooting over the head of four Falcons. The four Falcons can only turn and stare as the Wildcats score again. There is a lot of action in the shot, probably too much. I thought this image was interesting because it shows one of the key Chapel Hill [...]

Here Wildcat Hannah Elledge (#12) goes up for a layup in the first half of the game. I had the flash, my Vivirar, set up on a stand to my left, near the corner of the court. It was early in the game and I was still playing with the light levels. I think that the flash is overpowering the ambient light levels a bit too much her, but the players are getting that separation from the background that makes a good shot. It’s time to get a second off-camera flash so I can even out the light a bit better. There will be more posts on this shoot this week. I have some interesting photos of the cheerleaders. Besides the game photos that were posted yesterday, I have a few more to post. I will also address a few technical issues that this shoot brought up for me. If you find this post useful or interesting, please consider buying me a cup of coffee.Related Posts:Wildcats Vs.
I took this picture a few years ago, during the Durham Bulls’ 8-3 loss to the Columbus Clippers on 8/1/2007. I believe that this was my first trip to the DBAP – the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. These Bulls, ours not Chicagos’s, are currently the Triple A team for the Tampa Bay Rays. The park is nice and small, tickets are affordable and the location is in the newly redeveloped American Historic Tobaco District. We went a few times that summer and enjoyed ourselves. I submitted this photo, for the heck of it, to the local paper. A few weeks later it was published in the Chapel Hill News for “Your Best Sports Shot” on September 5th, 2007. [Note: My name is spelled incorrectly as Tom instead of Tim.] I had another shot, called Game Over, from that game published as well. If you find this post useful or interesting, please consider buying me a cup of coffee.Related Posts:Game Overtim o’brien photostim in print | UNC Kickballtim in print | Lacrosse Title Matchtim in print| Summer Softball Championship
