More and more, I am finding myself using my iPod Touch as a pocket watch. For those times my watch is not handy, but my iPod is (which is surprisingly often), I find that I turn to it to check to the time. The font is just large enough that I do not need to read it with glasses. At night, I used to have to lift my alarm clock up to my face to read the time. Yes, I should get a large print clock, but they do not have great alarm or radio settings. My iPod Touch, though, is usually recharging right next to the clock. It is smaller, unencumbered by wires and I can also check my email if I am unlikely to fall back asleep quickly. Read more iPhone accessibility reviews here. PS My iPod wallpaper is a photo I took of our dog, Hero, sitting on a large rock in a local dog park. She does not usually drool!
The NYTimes ran an article, The Work of Fashion Photographer Richard Avedon, with an accompanying audio slideshow today that is worth checking out. The article is inspired byt a retrospective of Avedon’s photography at the International Center of Photography. That blueprint is, broadly, the subject of a retrospective at the International Center of Photography, from May 15 to Sept. 6. From his earliest, sun-splashed pictures in 1944 to portraits in 2000 that convey his fashion fatigue, the I.C.P. exhibition is the largest survey of Avedon’s fashion work since the Metropolitan Museum show in 1978. The slidewhow offers full screen images with a pair of informative audio essays by the exhibit curators. This makes a fifth pick for me by the State of Things. In case this image looks familiar, it ran in the Chapel Hill News a few weeks ago as I mentioned in tim in print | Tap, Tap, Tap Dance. Other than this, I have no photo related news. I did not get an assignment last weekend. I left the camera in the bag, giving my trigger finger some rest.
The iPhone Mail app offers an adjustable minimum font size. It is not obvious how to access this setting. Apple buried this feature in the Settings app and can not be accessed from the Mail app itself. From the home screen, tap on the Settings app. Then tap on the Mail, Contacts & Calendars tab. From there you can selcet the font size. The options run from small to giant, though I do thot think that Apple uses the same dictionary that I do. Regardless, the size variation makes a significant difference in the readability of email messages. The settings also controls minimum font sizes in the Calendar and Contacts apps. Multitouch zoom functions in Mail, so you can zoom in when the Giant font is not large enough. For, I also need to zoom in. Unfortunately, Calendar and Contacts do not allow zoom. None of these apps allow landscape mode either, which could also increase readability. As you can see with these two screen shots, small is much smaller than giant. You can also see that giant is already pretty small. Read more iPhone accessibility reviews here.
Google Maps is a great thing. There is no question about it. But it is not perfect. Surprisingly, it suffers from the same gripe I have with map books and atlases. I can not read the print. It is simply too small, no matter how much you zoom in. This is true both on a computer and on an iPhone. On a PC, the proper balance of Full page and text zoom can help, but there is no similar solution on the iPhone. As you can see here, no matter how much I zoom into Chapel Hill in the iPhone’s Maps app, the text size stays tiny. The screen stays uncluttered, but I am still lost. How could this be fixed? One option is to to allow for adjustable font sizes. If a cluttered map with overlapping text a serious issue, how about some kind of pop-up box when a street is tapped? There must be a creative solution out there. Google just needs to find and implement it. Until then, iPhone maps are just some pretty pictures for me. Hmmm… That last sentence gave me an idea for a workaround. Screenshots, where you take a picture of what is [...]

I was in an odd humor this afternoon. I took my camera out, which I have not done in a while, to try and capture the mood, so to speak. As usual, it did not work out as planned. My tripod and light stand were in the parking lot at my wife’s work in the trunk of our car. The camera remote trigger is missing. But I persevered. I got one decent image before I surrendered. I used Lightroom’s Clarity control to generate these three versions. Which works for you. I had my Vivitar on a chair in front of me bouncing off a biege board. I used an optical trigger with an on-camer diffused sb400 at low power. Not a perfect setting, but wht can you do? The glasses are my thick low vision reading glasses and the wires are my headphones. I never go much of anywhere without either of them.
I had two best men at my wedding. Their tandem toast revolved around my relationship to BPR. Addiction may be the word they used. So, as I was browsing the iPhone app store on my iPod Touch, I could not resist testing out NPR Mobile when I ran across it. NPR Mobile is an unofficial app, put together by a volunteer and released gratis. From the web site: NPR Mobile 1.0 is an easy-to-use application that will help you find your favorite NPR programs and segments. I’ve found that with it, I am able to expose myself to additional NPR programming that my local station doesn’t carry. Often times, when I wake up in the morning, I half-hear a story on Morning Edition, and want to come back to it later in the day. With NPR Mobile, I’ve been able to do this, and hear the full story on my time. It does exactly what it is supposed to do and it does it with a simple elegance. But how does it look from a low vision perspective? Since I was curious about the accessibility of the app, I look a look at their sotry, Some Technology Leaves The Blind [...]

The wrestling marathon that I blogged about last night in Wrestling Outtakes paid off. The best image from the last match I shot made it into this morning’s paper in black and white. The original color version is below. In this shot, Corey Mock, headed for a fourth straight state championship, dominates the championship match in his weight class. Mock pinned down Sanderson’s Justin McElreath to win the 135 pound weight class. The image is still too dark for me, despite some work in LightRoom. You can see Corey’s face, despite the angling away, so it was a keeper. I submitted two other photos for consideration. This one features Chapel Hill High’s Joshua Craig wrestling Leesville Road’s Trevor Kamens in the championship match of his weight class. Craig took second place. The wrestlers are overexposed relative to the background and it is a bit grainy, but otherwise not too bad. In this last image, Devin Solow of Chapel Hill wrestles into third place in the 112 pound weight class. Solow beat Patrick Waivers of JH Rose in a 3-0 decision in the final match of the consolation bracket. The idea behind this was to capture the intensity of the moment, [...]

As I mentioned at the end of last week, I spent much of Saturday Pinning Down Some Wrestiling Images. After spending eight hours navigating brackets, changing batteries, squatting at mat edges and dealing with a hot, crowded gym, I came home with well over two hundred photos. Three were submitted to the photo editors and one should come out tomorrow in the Chapel Hill News. The assignment was to shoot the Chapel Hill wrestlers at the Mideast Regionals. In particular, I was supposed to get a shot of Corey Mock, one of the team’s stars. But I have never been to a wrestling match, never mind a regional competition. What I know of wrestling comes from the occassional Olympic match and whatever high school wrestling has made it to the screen, big or small. Oops. Let’s skip over the problems of a legally blind guy getting around town on a weekend without his normal chauffeur. [Just thank George and Martha for me.] The lighting conditions were unpleasant with minimal fluorescents in a dark gym. Two of the referee tables had ghastly glowing panels in front. There were three mats laid side-by-side, so there were three matches going on at any [...]

While shooting the women’s basketball game last week (see Wildcats v. Falcons in the Paper), I took of few pictures of the cheerleading squads. Despite not having thrown enough light their way, several shots came out reasonably well. This one above is the best of the cheerleader series. It is popular on Flickr as well, though possibly not for the same reasons. I wish I had more separation in the top half, but the light works for the bottom havlf of the imae. Ther is good color contrast and vertical and horizontal lines that catch the eye. The dark uniforms do not stand out well in this shot against the dark panel on the wall. The cluttered backgroud does not help here either. I kept swiveling the light stand in the second half, hoping to get this shot right. It proved to difficult to adjust the lighting for the cheering squad in the stands and still have it back when the ball returned to the near half of the court. I will return to this puzzle in a later post. This final image is my second favorite cheer photo. There is something about the Faclon squad’s unifrom that created some [...]
