A couple of Sundays ago, I had a spread in the Real Estate section of the local Chapel Hill News. As usual I had two days notice. The forecast was for rain, rain and more rain. I have never done any real estate photos before, so was not even sure how to light the rooms. The outside shots, something for which I had better ideas were threatened by the weather. The concept was to capture cousins who live next door to each other in a development in the nearby town of Mebane. The lead shot was suggested by the N&O’s photo editor. He suggested getting the two cousins on their property line, showing a bit of the exterior of both homes. It did not start off well. The rain got us all wet. The wind knocked my light stand over and my cheapo wireless trigger has not worked the same since. When I finally got my flash working again, I had raindrops on my lens filter that snuck by me unnoticed. Looking closely at this image, you can see the blurry spot between ther feet. Regardless, I prefer this shot the most from the published photos. The flash is shooting [...]

As I mentioned earlier, I had some Sportsplex Photos in the News. For the assignment, I submitted four more photos that did not make the cut. I liked this first shot a olt. It is a bit too artsy and dark, I think, for the paper. I had my light on a stand to camera left, but it was hard to get the light to hit the right spot. The space was long and narrow, not leaving me a good place to put my light and keep it out of sight. This photo has the same setup as above, but looks a bit too pased for the paper’s style. With the dark light, it was a bit too grainy at the high ISO. The color did not come out in this one, but it was meant to catch some of the new equipment. They shoudl have had a bit more fun with their choice of walll colors. I had my light shooting through an umbrella at camera left oppsoite the jogger. Oops, though, I forgot to get the woman’s name for the caption. The first three rules for captions are: Names, names and names. My bad. Don’t go to two [...]

Being an avid news junkie and a fan of the New York Times, it was inevitable that I find the NYTimes iPhone app. I found the app a while ago and have been drafting a review. From an accessibility point of view the app had little going for it. Since it was slow to load articles and hard to read, I did not use it often and procrastinated finishing the review. Then I checked my App Store for updates tonight and found a new version of the Times for the iPhone. At first, I did not think much had changed besides a trendier color scheme. The font is small and difficult to make out. The app swivels, but the font stays the same. There is no zoom on the main page either. But the is where the similarities end. The first noticeable difference is the speed. The new iteration loads articles much faster, leaving less wasted time. Even if I can not skim through the titles on the front page, I can skim through the articles themselves quickly and easily. Now you can also save article for later reading and send them quickly via email. But How Accessible Is It? [...]

“Feed My Inbox is a very simple service that attempts to bridge the gap between feeds (RSS, XML, Atom) and email.” Once you tell Feed My Inbox to keep you up to date on a particular web site or blog, Feed My Inbox will email you each day if there is new content on that site. It is that simple. You can unsubscribe any time from a particular feed. Just click on the unsubscribe link in the daily update. It’s As Easy As That A good question is: How Does this Work? It must either cost money or be complicated to sign up and then get updates. No, on both counts. There is not registration process whatsoever. It is free. And you subscribe to updates in three easy steps. From the Feed My Inbox web site: Step 1 Find the site you would like to track, such as a blog, a news site, twitter feed, or even craigslist search results. Most browsers will display whether there is a feed on the page or not.
Spotted on Slashdot | Bionic Eye Gives Blind Man Sight: “A man who lost his sight 30 years ago says he can now see flashes of light after being fitted with a bionic eye. Ron, 73, had the experimental surgery seven months ago at London’s Moorfield’s eye hospital. He says he can now follow white lines on the road, and even sort socks using the bionic eye, known as Argus II. I wouldn’t go as far as claiming he regained his sight, but this certainly is a biotechnological breakthrough.” We are a long way from a million dollar man, bu it is a small step in the right direction. With stem cell research, will bionic or organic win the race?
The wrestling marathon that I blogged about last night in Wrestling Outtakes paid off. The best image from the last match I shot made it into this morning’s paper in black and white. The original color version is below. In this shot, Corey Mock, headed for a fourth straight state championship, dominates the championship match in his weight class. Mock pinned down Sanderson’s Justin McElreath to win the 135 pound weight class. The image is still too dark for me, despite some work in LightRoom. You can see Corey’s face, despite the angling away, so it was a keeper. I submitted two other photos for consideration. This one features Chapel Hill High’s Joshua Craig wrestling Leesville Road’s Trevor Kamens in the championship match of his weight class. Craig took second place. The wrestlers are overexposed relative to the background and it is a bit grainy, but otherwise not too bad. In this last image, Devin Solow of Chapel Hill wrestles into third place in the 112 pound weight class. Solow beat Patrick Waivers of JH Rose in a 3-0 decision in the final match of the consolation bracket. The idea behind this was to capture the intensity of the moment, [...]

As I mentioned at the end of last week, I spent much of Saturday Pinning Down Some Wrestiling Images. After spending eight hours navigating brackets, changing batteries, squatting at mat edges and dealing with a hot, crowded gym, I came home with well over two hundred photos. Three were submitted to the photo editors and one should come out tomorrow in the Chapel Hill News. The assignment was to shoot the Chapel Hill wrestlers at the Mideast Regionals. In particular, I was supposed to get a shot of Corey Mock, one of the team’s stars. But I have never been to a wrestling match, never mind a regional competition. What I know of wrestling comes from the occassional Olympic match and whatever high school wrestling has made it to the screen, big or small. Oops. Let’s skip over the problems of a legally blind guy getting around town on a weekend without his normal chauffeur. [Just thank George and Martha for me.] The lighting conditions were unpleasant with minimal fluorescents in a dark gym. Two of the referee tables had ghastly glowing panels in front. There were three mats laid side-by-side, so there were three matches going on at any [...]

The Wall Street Journal carried the sotry with New Kindle Audio Feature Causes a Stir. Several fellow accessibility blogs have picked up the issue.
The NY Times, along with every other news source, is reporting on the new version of Amazon’s e-book reader, the Kindle.Buried among all the other changes is one important accessibility feature: text-to-speech. According to the Times: Giving Voice to the Kindle: The Kindle 2 also has text-to-speech built in. “Any book, blog, magazine or personal document can be read aloud,” Mr. Bezos said. Users can switch between reading text and hearing it read by a fairly computerized voice. “It’s very easy to go back and forth between reading and listening,” Mr. Bezos said I have tested out the first version, as my wife has the Kindle 1.0. With its adjustable font size set to the maximum, I can read the text fairly easily with my low vision reading glasses. I look forward to testing out the new text-to-speech feature when I find someone with the new version. The new Kindle’s text-to-speech offers two voices, male and female, and does not offer variable speed playback. I really like the variable spped playback on the iPod, though I wish it had more than three settings. We will have to wait on reviews of the reading quality, but Nuance, who provides the Kindle’s [...]

Here Wildcat Hannah Elledge (#12) goes up for a layup in the first half of the game. I had the flash, my Vivirar, set up on a stand to my left, near the corner of the court. It was early in the game and I was still playing with the light levels. I think that the flash is overpowering the ambient light levels a bit too much her, but the players are getting that separation from the background that makes a good shot. It’s time to get a second off-camera flash so I can even out the light a bit better. There will be more posts on this shoot this week. I have some interesting photos of the cheerleaders. Besides the game photos that were posted yesterday, I have a few more to post. I will also address a few technical issues that this shoot brought up for me. If you find this post useful or interesting, please consider buying me a cup of coffee.Related Posts:Wildcats Vs.
I am off to shoot hoops tomorrow. The Chapel Hill News has asked me to photograph the East Chapel Hill Women Wildcats’ basketball game at Jordan High. I shot an ECH men’s b-ball game for the News just before Thanksgiving. Let’s see if I can learn from that experience to get some better shots. I just hope the gym is not as poorly lit as I think it will be. If you find this post useful or interesting, please consider buying me a cup of coffee.Related Posts:Wildcats v.
Check out the Game Faces Slideshow on the N&O Sports page! I spent the morning shooting all the pre-game festivities before today’s football game between UNC and NC State. Boy was it cold this morning! My chaffeur had the day off so I took at bus shortly after eight this morning. I has a quick cup of coffee on Franklin St. before pulling my Nikon out. First, I checked out the band warm-up in the Pit, then the traditional team march down from the Old Well to the Stadium. After that, I walked throuh Tar Heel Town past the stadium to the tailgaters in the Manning parking lot (actually on Skipper Bowles Drive). What a great group of folks tailgating. A bunch of folks offered me food and everyone was up for having their photo taken! It was a long four hours, but fun. If you find this post useful or interesting, please consider buying me a cup of coffee.Related Posts:Game Faces OnlineShooting UNC v.
