About three and a half years ago, I started the Blind Photographers group on Flickr. I was curious to see if I was the only blind (or visually impaired) photographer around. I certainly was not alone. I asked “Is anyone out there?“. Within a short time, I had my answers. Since then, membership in the group has grown to over 150, over half of which are visually impaired photographers who contribute images to the group pool and thoughts to the discussion forums. There is even a regional group, Visually-impaired photographers in the UK, run by a great guy, Brian Negus. Over the last year, we have taken our Flickr group to the next step. With the skilled help from blind photog, Alex de Jong, we have built a web site, Blind Photographers, for our group. The site features both a photo blog, with a new image daily from one our members, and articles, written by, for and about blind photogrpahers. Not only does the site feature related news, but alsow includes equipment reviews, philosophical musings and personal stories. On the site, you can read about Project BlindSighted, where members discuss their vision and technique. We are making some inroads into [...]

This makes a fifth pick for me by the State of Things. In case this image looks familiar, it ran in the Chapel Hill News a few weeks ago as I mentioned in tim in print | Tap, Tap, Tap Dance. Other than this, I have no photo related news. I did not get an assignment last weekend. I left the camera in the bag, giving my trigger finger some rest. I hope that this will release some creative juices for my next photo opps.
The wrestling marathon that I blogged about last night in Wrestling Outtakes paid off. The best image from the last match I shot made it into this morning’s paper in black and white. The original color version is below. In this shot, Corey Mock, headed for a fourth straight state championship, dominates the championship match in his weight class. Mock pinned down Sanderson’s Justin McElreath to win the 135 pound weight class. The image is still too dark for me, despite some work in LightRoom. You can see Corey’s face, despite the angling away, so it was a keeper. I submitted two other photos for consideration. This one features Chapel Hill High’s Joshua Craig wrestling Leesville Road’s Trevor Kamens in the championship match of his weight class. Craig took second place. The wrestlers are overexposed relative to the background and it is a bit grainy, but otherwise not too bad. In this last image, Devin Solow of Chapel Hill wrestles into third place in the 112 pound weight class. Solow beat Patrick Waivers of JH Rose in a 3-0 decision in the final match of the consolation bracket. The idea behind this was to capture the intensity of the moment, [...]

On a recent snow day, we took our dogs and the camera for an outing in one of the local dog parks. The pups are almost one year old, so this was their first real snow. The romp in the park was a real joy for them and fun for us to see. With the diffuse light and snowy backdrop, the camera was using very fast shutter speeds at all aperture settings. I thought this would help freeze (no pun intended) the action as the dogs never stop moving. Surprising, I had no such luck. All the photos of the dogs were quite blurry and the camera did not get a good exposure for the black dogs, despite spot metering. Most of these images had to be tossed and the rest heavily edited. This photo’s light levels were heavily manipulated in LR, but I liked the finished prodcut anyway. If you find this post useful or interesting, please consider buying me a cup of coffee.Related Posts:Snowy PondAnother Carrboro GooseVega in the Bucket (and in the Paper)Happy as a Pig in . . .Musings: Vision, Light & Photography

I have been remiss in not blogging earlier about a great resource for blind photography, Vince’s Parallax. As Vince puts it: The pages referred to here are about blind photographers and their work, techniques that anyone could use to take photos, and ways of representing the finished images. Vince has done an amazing job of bringing together the disparate world of blind photography and their work into one accessible web page. Vince even lists this blog. Vince is also a blind photographer. You can see his work on flickr under his flickrname, vip_uc, and read about his process in Vince’s thread, Seeing my images: vip_uc, in the Blind Photogrphers‘ project. Check www.visionwalk.org to see what cities are participating in your state. The goal of this group is to bring awareness to the general public about the eye diseases that affect so many; macular degeneration, Retinitis Pigmetosa, Usher, Stargardt’s among many others.
