Now in its 20th year, “Insights” is the country’s pre-eminent selected exhibition of paintings, photographs and mixed-media pieces by legally blind artists. What began as an event focused on works of purely tactile interest — just 13 the first year — has evolved into a show of some 120 pieces where the emphasis is on the visual, and on an interpretation of it more in line with the one Ms. Kitazawa had in mind. Featuring all genres of art, Insights puts serious though into what the exhibit really means, for art and for the blind. “The exhibition is framed to be about limits and what can be done within them,” said Lawrence Rinder, the director of the Berkeley Art Museum, who was a juror for “Insights” this year. That thematic framing, he added, locates the show’s blind artists very much in the tradition of artists in general. “We all have limits of perception, and all artists work within that envelope.” Accompanying the article, ” ‘Insights’ Showcases [...]

There is a new photography exhibit opening this week displaying works by blind and visually impaired photographers. The show, Sights Unseen, runs from 19 – 23 January at The Association of Photographers Gallery in London. The BBC News has produced an audio slideshow with images from the exhibit and discussion by the photographers and others involved in the exhibit. As the BBC article describes the show: “How can you use a camera if you can't see? Over 30 blind and visually impaired adults from the UK, Mexico and China have been trained in sensory photography techniques to create and experience photos.” The exhibit is sponsored by PhotoVoice, who descrive the show as “(a)n accessible exhibition of photographs by blind and visually impaired people. ” The sponsoring organization works to turn cameras around. “At PhotoVoice we encourage the use of documentary photography by enabling those that have traditionally been the subject of such work to become its creator – to have control over how they are perceived by the rest of the world, while simultaneously learning a new skill which can enhance their lives.” If you find this post useful or interesting, please consider buying me a cup of coffee.Related Posts:Sight [...]

San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, CA just completed an exhibit of blind and visually-impaired artists in Creative Vision: An Exhibition on Vision and Perception. At the College’s Delta Center for the Arts, Creative Vision: is ran from February 26 to March 27, 2009. Note from the Gallery Director, Jan Marlese: I first became aware of artists working with vision impairments through one of the exhibiting artists, Mr. Scott Nelson, through his work as founder and curator of the touring exhibition, Art of the Eye. Following in my mentor’s footsteps, this exhibition presents the art of blind and visually impaired artists working in a variety of mediums. The concept of the exhibition is to illustrate the influence vision impairments have on the artists’ creative processes. What may appear to be works of art about restricted vision is ultimately seen to be enhanced expressions of available sight, visual memory, imagination, and dreams. Limitations from the artists’ vision impairments are presented as an important, creative force—breaking the barriers visually impaired artists have faced to be defined by their work, not by their disability. The exhibition presents learning opportunities that support serious consideration of the importance of seeing differently. That vision exists beyond [...]

Starting from zero, ideas take shape, momentum builds, creativity gathers speed, and a new work of art is created. How does art propel your success and provide you freedom of expression? As an artist, what sets you in motion—and how do you fuel your imagination? Describe your artistic journey and how disability might shape your creative process. Define how you measure success both artistically and within your career pathway. Share with us your work that will launch you to the next level. You can accelerate your development by giving yourself a fresh set of challenges, or the same set viewed from a different angle, every day. Explore a different path—if it’s a dead end, explore another. — Paul Foxton We are interested in [...]
