Last weekend, the Chapel Hill News sent me to shoot a local family event. Carrboro Parks & Rec organizes an annual parent-child basketball skills contest. This year’s event took place last Saturday at a local middle school. The gum was a bit dark, but I brought some flashes and took my time. I stayed for about two and a half hours, giving me time to set up some acceptable light. The paper printed three of the photos with the article, chapelhillnews.com | Parent-Child Challenge. The first image (top right here) relies on my off-camera flash on a stand to camera left, either via optical slave or by the wireless trigger. I spotted the second (on left) far from the light stand, so tried different variations with an without my on-board SB-400. The flash does not work well from a distance, so I think this was with a very slow shutter speed and a prayer for a steady hand. The last (lower right here) away from the light stand, but there was better light near the entryway to the gym. I used different commendations of an-board SB-400 Nd my Vivitar on a stand. The best light came from both flashes simultaneously [...]

My local paper, theChapel Hill News, ran a very nicely done story, Through a lens darkly, about me a few weeks ago. The reported had done the interview a while ago, so I did not know when to expect it. The day it ran, I brought the paper in only to toss it into the living room for later perusal. An hour later, an email arrived congratulating me. I checked the paper again and found two of my images on the front page. Definitely a nice feeling. Legally blind photographer adigital pioneer Before he takes a single photograph, Tim O’Brien circles the periphery of the outdoor hockey rink. “I need to familiarize myself with the environment and my subject,” he said. “I’m using all the available information — from memories, to sounds, to the reactions of others — to stitch an image together.” You would not know O’Brien is legally blind. He does not use a cane, dark glasses or a guide dog. Independent and determined, he moves as freely as possible. “Without a cane or other external indicators, my blindness is paradoxically invisible,” said O’Brien acknowledging for many it is hard to see he is blind without the accepted [...]

I had a nice selection of four shots in last week’s paper, cCLIFF’S CARVES OUT A CHAMPIONSHIP. I had had a tough time shooting the previous week’s playoff game (see Summer Softball Playoffs) as the game started late. This time around, they played a double header and I had good tlight for the first game. Amred with good light and good karma, I came home with some good photos. PHOTOS BY TIM O’BRIEN Above, Cliff’s Meat Market’s Lucy Stephenson swings for the fence early in the first game of the hard-fought double-header Carrboro Co-Rec softball finals against Chapel Hill Air at Hank Anderson Park on Tuesday. Below, Chapel Hill Air’s Ed Sawyer takes a good cut during the first game. Cliff’s Meat Market went on to win both games to take the championship in the Carrboro Parks and Recreation league. Above was the lead photo for the story, catching a good hack at the ball early in the game. The photo below was cropped to the top half to catch the pitcher’s toss. Here I caught another swing with some decent movement of the ball. I like this shot, but it ended up as a tiny shot on the front [...]

A couple of weeks ago, I shot a local summer softball playoff game. A pair of images from the shoot made it to the paper in Five down, two left in Carrboro Co-Rec. Above, high fives and congratulations end the night after Cliff’s Meat Market won 13-12 over the Chapel Hill Realty Group at Carrboro’s Hank Anderson Park. Cliff”s hard-fought wins over Milltown and CHRG on Thursday sends it into the final. Below, CHRG’s Dave Shaw jumps on a pitch Thursday night. The game had a late start shortly after 8PM. So the light was poor from the start and just got worse. As usual it took me some time to get into the zone, wasting valuable light. Before I knew it, I was shooting at ISO 1600 and a shutter spped slower than 1/160th of a second. This makes taking action shots tough. Too slow to catch action, too slow to stop camera shake. Fortunately, I learned a bit about Lightroom’s grain reduction controls, though these did little more than take the edge off. I ended up get more decent shots of the team in grey, Cliff’s Meat Market. Unfortunately, Cliff’s won, meaning they would move on to the [...]

A few weeks ago, I spent the evening shooting a youth baseball game for the paper. The story was highlighting a new regional league. Three images accompanied Players find H.E.C.C. of a success. From the article: Carrboro Recreation and Parks is taking that optimistic approach to its latest cooperative venture, the Hillsborough-East Chatham-Carrboro (H.E.C.C.) Baseball League, comprising 13-15-year-old players from two Hillsborough Youth Athletic League teams; three East Chatham baseball teams; and two Carrboro Recreation and Parks squads, the Red Sox and Braves. I sat behind home plate for a good while hoping to get this shot. I got the ball in this one, but the autofocus was not my friend. I learned a trick aftwerwards to deal with this and will post on it later. I spent too much time shooting batters and pitches, but managed to get a few action shots. Another action shot: I have a few other shots that I like. I will post these outtakes and discuss some of the challenges in a later post If you find this post useful or interesting, please consider buying me a cup of coffee.Related Posts:slideshow: HECC Baseballtim in print| Summer Softball Championshiptim in print | Summer Softball Playoffstim [...]

A couple of weeks ago, I shot a youth triathlon for the paper. Three photos accompanied the story, Swim for Smiles Triathlon chases away the rain. It was a fun shoot, though alternately wet and warm. From the article: The event was the first of three planned this summer for the Swim for Smiles Foundation, a Chapel Hill-based charity. The group holds fun, youth-oriented, swimming-related events to raise money for the North Carolina Children’s Hospital. This was one of the last shots I took. I finally got into a good rhythm and found a good spot to catch the last uphill of the running segment for the younger kids on the short course. I just has to catch a photogenic kid with identifiable numbers. Shooting the pool was tricky. There was no easy way to know whom I was shooting. I had to look for interesting group shots. Splashes are also hard to make that cool, especially for a community paper looking for faces. This one showed a bit of the crowd and the swimmers had a good geometry. I don’t know why parents put kids under ten in triathlons, but they make for great photos! I have a ton of [...]

I have officially arrived! On Saturday, I received my first official press pass. It felt so cool. The pass let me into the restricted area around the field. Saturday night was the state championship game for mean’s high school lacrosse. The Chapel Hill Tigers lost 19-13 to the Charlotte Providence Panthers. As little as I know about lacrosse, it was an exciting game. The Panthers pulled ahead early in the first quarter. Chapel Hill fought back in the second quarter to tie the game 10-10 early in the third. Charlotte Providence then scored six unanswered goals and that was it. I shot well over two hundred photos, submitted fifteen to the paper and had two published with the story, Long live the Queen (City), yesterday. You can see the two photos online here. North Carolina high school lacrosse underwent a sea of change last weekend, as the last NCHSLA state championships both went to Charlotte schools. The sports page featured the following two shots. This one led the sports page, pasted across the top of the page. This one followed below to add some emotion. I will delve a bit into the challenges of shooting lacrosse in a later post.
The Chapel Hill News published this article, Putter in hand, angling for an A, on Sunday with two of my photos. The event was the annual Golf-O-Rama put on by the honors geometry classes at Chapel Hill High School to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House. Weeks before the first putt, students write a paper that establishes a theme for each hole, lays out specific measurements and explains the geometric principles at play. With their plans approved, students then construct scale models with every piece as intricate as the full-size holes, which measure 32 square feet. The lead image, on the bottom of the front page, features a cute little six year old girl trying out miniature golf for the first time. Irresistibly cute! The inside shot shows off the Mario Brothers mushroom hole. It was a popular attraction. Its builders loved the camera. It was not my best shoot by far. I had the normal difficulties of a high school gym (tough lighting) and a a camera sensitive crowd. On top of this, I needed to balance players facing the ball on the floor with the height needed to capture the the hole’s layout. Instead of focusing alternately [...]

I spent a good chunk of Friday evening covering a local high school lacrosse playoff game. The East Chapel Hill Wildacts beat Mt. Tabor in the end 9-7 as you can read in the accompanying arricle to these two images: Wildcats live to fight another day. The shoot presented some serious technical and personal challenges, so I thought the shoot was a bust until I saw the paper. Fortunately for East, its defense was up to the task Friday night. Despite lapses in man-up situations, East used defense to grind past Mount Tabor, 9-7, in the North Carolina High School Lacrosse Association quarterfinals. Despite grainy, dark images, the photos in the paper came out surprisingly nicely. I was stunned. I will go into the challenges in a later post with some of the outtakes. I needed an action shot where I could identify the player and this was it. I had a few nicer action shot, but could not figure out the player numbers. This image ended up taking up a good portion of the top half of the front of the sports seciton. I submitted this shot on a whim. I really like it, but did not think that [...]

As I mentioned yesterday in tim in print | climbing the walls, I shot the Dixie Rock 20 indoor climbing event this past weekend here in Chapel Hill. From the two day event, which included both amateur and USAC competitions, I was there for a few hours at lunchtime, catching a lot of the locals. These two shots from the assignment made into the paper with this article: Dixie Rock celebrates 20 years and climbingg. My shots were not as good as David Hobby’s in Lighting a Large Interior, though I tried to draw some inspiration from him. I did not have enough strobes, a fast enough lens or a cooperative enough subject. With the slower lens, I shot with high ISO, making for some seriously grainy shots. A single strobe can’t ramp up the ambient in a gymnasium. Slowere shutter speeds require a tripod, which is hard to use in a live event. I liked the Descent shot a lot, but failed to drop the flash level as she came down. You can see the shadows on the wall. A few of my favorite shots were of this young lady. She was practicing on the short wall, allowing me [...]

I shot the Dixie Rock 20 indoor climbing event this past weekend here in Chapel Hill. From the two day event, which included both amateur and USAC competitions, I was there for a few hours at lunchtime, catching a lot of the locals. These two shots from the assignment made into the paper with this article: Dixie Rock celebrates 20 years and climbing. For this lead shot, it dawned on me after an hour or so that a group, wide-angle shot would work well. All I needed was to find a section of the wall with multiple climbers. Hopefully, this gives the sense of action and competition I was looking for. This shot, of a local climber, was one of a number of individuals I shot that day. With dim gymnasium lighting and no good spot for my off-0amera flash, lighting was a bit tricky. Fortunately, this climber was both photogenic and wearing good colors ( that highlight her face). More details and outtakes tomorrow! If you find this post useful or interesting, please consider buying me a cup of coffee.Related Posts:Climbing Outtakestim in print | UNC Kickballtim in print | Tap, Tap, Tap DanceMebane OuttakesKickball Outtakes
