I have officially arrived! On Saturday, I received my first official press pass. It felt so cool. The pass let me into the restricted area around the field. Saturday night was the state championship game for mean’s high school lacrosse. The Chapel Hill Tigers lost 19-13 to the Charlotte Providence Panthers. As little as I know about lacrosse, it was an exciting game. The Panthers pulled ahead early in the first quarter. Chapel Hill fought back in the second quarter to tie the game 10-10 early in the third. Charlotte Providence then scored six unanswered goals and that was it. I shot well over two hundred photos, submitted fifteen to the paper and had two published with the story, Long live the Queen (City), yesterday. You can see the two photos online here. North Carolina high school lacrosse underwent a sea of change last weekend, as the last NCHSLA state championships both went to Charlotte schools. The sports page featured the following two shots. This one led the sports page, pasted across the top of the page. This one followed below to add some emotion. I will delve a bit into the challenges of shooting lacrosse in a later post. If [...]

I spent a good chunk of Friday evening covering a local high school lacrosse playoff game. The East Chapel Hill Wildacts beat Mt. Tabor in the end 9-7 as you can read in the accompanying arricle to these two images: Wildcats live to fight another day. The shoot presented some serious technical and personal challenges, so I thought the shoot was a bust until I saw the paper. Fortunately for East, its defense was up to the task Friday night. Despite lapses in man-up situations, East used defense to grind past Mount Tabor, 9-7, in the North Carolina High School Lacrosse Association quarterfinals. Despite grainy, dark images, the photos in the paper came out surprisingly nicely. I was stunned. I will go into the challenges in a later post with some of the outtakes. I needed an action shot where I could identify the player and this was it. I had a few nicer action shot, but could not figure out the player numbers. This image ended up taking up a good portion of the top half of the front of the sports seciton. I submitted this shot on a whim. I really like it, but did not think that [...]

As I mentioned yesterday in tim in print | climbing the walls, I shot the Dixie Rock 20 indoor climbing event this past weekend here in Chapel Hill. From the two day event, which included both amateur and USAC competitions, I was there for a few hours at lunchtime, catching a lot of the locals. These two shots from the assignment made into the paper with this article: Dixie Rock celebrates 20 years and climbingg. My shots were not as good as David Hobby’s in Lighting a Large Interior, though I tried to draw some inspiration from him. I did not have enough strobes, a fast enough lens or a cooperative enough subject. With the slower lens, I shot with high ISO, making for some seriously grainy shots. A single strobe can’t ramp up the ambient in a gymnasium. Slowere shutter speeds require a tripod, which is hard to use in a live event. I liked the Descent shot a lot, but failed to drop the flash level as she came down. You can see the shadows on the wall. A few of my favorite shots were of this young lady. She was practicing on the short wall, allowing me [...]

I shot the Dixie Rock 20 indoor climbing event this past weekend here in Chapel Hill. From the two day event, which included both amateur and USAC competitions, I was there for a few hours at lunchtime, catching a lot of the locals. These two shots from the assignment made into the paper with this article: Dixie Rock celebrates 20 years and climbing. For this lead shot, it dawned on me after an hour or so that a group, wide-angle shot would work well. All I needed was to find a section of the wall with multiple climbers. Hopefully, this gives the sense of action and competition I was looking for. This shot, of a local climber, was one of a number of individuals I shot that day. With dim gymnasium lighting and no good spot for my off-0amera flash, lighting was a bit tricky. Fortunately, this climber was both photogenic and wearing good colors ( that highlight her face). More details and outtakes tomorrow! If you find this post useful or interesting, please consider buying me a cup of coffee.Related Posts:Climbing Outtakestim in print | UNC Kickballtim in print | Tap, Tap, Tap DanceMebane OuttakesKickball Outtakes

The Durham News printed two images form the tap dance asignment on Sunday in Tap is the tie that binds this ‘family’. CHAPEL HILL – On a recent sunny Saturday afternoon, the Ballet School of Chapel Hill is alive with activity as young dancers carrying tap shoes talk and laugh as they bound upstairs to Studio C. The story might be the same as the one in the Chapel Hill News (see tim in print | Tap, Tap, Tap Dance), but the secondary shot from CHN was the primary in Durham and they choose a different second shot. We went to the show on Saturday night. Fantastic! I wish I had shot a dress rehearsal at the Druham Theatre. The backdrop and space would have worked nicley and the customes were great.
The Chapel Hill News printed two of my photos yesterday with the story, Youth tap dance company prepares for season finale. As I talked about in an earlier post, Tap Dance Outtakes, a couple Saturdays ago, I shot a tap dance rehearsal. A difficult shoot, but a lot of fun. The assignment was to catch the preparation for North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble‘s (NCYTE) upcoming show, Good Vibrations, this weekend in Durham. From the lead photo’s caption: Feet fly during a recent rehearsal by the North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble. The group will perform in Durham this weekend. I really like the leas shot, which made the front page. I was trying to get a more creative shot. The safe shots just were not coming out as I had wanted. With the tight space, street clothes, difficult lighting hurdles and equipment limitations, I hoped that trying to catch a line of tap shoes would pay off. I think it did. The second shot, on the inside page, was a small black and white of the in sync shot above. I took this shot close to the end of rehearsal. I think I was getting closer to finding a group shot [...]

The Chapel Hill News printed three of my photo today with the story, Do the math on UNC’s inttamural kickball tournament on Saturday. From the caption on the lead photo: Mean Machine’s Anderson Shore, a UNC freshman, pitches during a playoff win at UNC’s intramural kickball tournament Saturday on Hooker Fields. Kickball, a recreational throwback to the playground game you played when you were a schoolkid, has grown into an annual event on the Carolina campus calendar. I posted Kickball Outtakes a few days ago with some more photos from the day. The post alse talks a bit about the challenges I faced and the technical details. I looked for the safe shots first. So I took the first two shots of pitching and kicking pretty early. The team building exercise made for a fun ‘unexpected’ shot between the two rounds of play I stayed for. These las ttow were submitted to the paper, but not run. I like the first one a lot, but was leaving as I shot it. I did not stay to get caption info. That and having the main subject’s back to the camera probably shot this one down. The last shot was another safe, [...]

On Saturday, I spent an hour or so on UNC’s Hooker Field shooting the intramural kickball tournament. We should see the article tomorrow with the accompanying photos. The day was beautiful for the tournament with bright sunny skies and warm weather. I shot it in the early/mid afternoon, catching some pretty strong shadows. I thought about setting up an off camera flash, but was not sure how to set it up to fill properly with the action all over the place. In the first round of playoffs, there were four games going on, so I scouted for best lighting and tried to get some basic ‘sure’ shots. The light was strong, so I shot at ISO 100 and a shutter speed above 250. I used shutter spped priority, so I could focus on the action rather than the camera. I seitched from my longer to my shorter lens over the day to try to mix it up a bit. From there, I tried to get good shots of students kicking the ball. It was tough as home plate was only a reference point for kicking. Too much movement to get a good zoom in shot. Getting the timing right was [...]

As I mentioned recently in Combine Line Jump, I did an assignment for the paper last Friday shooting a football prep session for the National Underclassmen Combine at East Chapel Hill High. The combine is a way for high school football players to prep for college recruitment. The shoot has not made it into the paper yet and is likely past its sell-by date. In the previous post, I detailed a bit of my attempts to light the session with my Viivitar. Before my lighting experiments, I used the sunset t to try to get some interesting shots using available light. I had to rely a bit on Lightroom graduated filter tool to try and recover some of the harsh shadows, especially in the portrait on the right. I should have found some way to throw the light from my flash, but it was too tricky for me. Generally, the coaches had the athletes facing away from the sun, throwing some long and dark shadows. I took some longer shots from the stands to get see the shadows. This made for some nice lines, but the shots feel a bit distant. I got closer to the action with my wider [...]

The wrestling marathon that I blogged about last night in Wrestling Outtakes paid off. The best image from the last match I shot made it into this morning’s paper in black and white. The original color version is below. In this shot, Corey Mock, headed for a fourth straight state championship, dominates the championship match in his weight class. Mock pinned down Sanderson’s Justin McElreath to win the 135 pound weight class. The image is still too dark for me, despite some work in LightRoom. You can see Corey’s face, despite the angling away, so it was a keeper. I submitted two other photos for consideration. This one features Chapel Hill High’s Joshua Craig wrestling Leesville Road’s Trevor Kamens in the championship match of his weight class. Craig took second place. The wrestlers are overexposed relative to the background and it is a bit grainy, but otherwise not too bad. In this last image, Devin Solow of Chapel Hill wrestles into third place in the 112 pound weight class. Solow beat Patrick Waivers of JH Rose in a 3-0 decision in the final match of the consolation bracket. The idea behind this was to capture the intensity of the moment, [...]

As I mentioned at the end of last week, I spent much of Saturday Pinning Down Some Wrestiling Images. After spending eight hours navigating brackets, changing batteries, squatting at mat edges and dealing with a hot, crowded gym, I came home with well over two hundred photos. Three were submitted to the photo editors and one should come out tomorrow in the Chapel Hill News. The assignment was to shoot the Chapel Hill wrestlers at the Mideast Regionals. In particular, I was supposed to get a shot of Corey Mock, one of the team’s stars. But I have never been to a wrestling match, never mind a regional competition. What I know of wrestling comes from the occassional Olympic match and whatever high school wrestling has made it to the screen, big or small. Oops. Let’s skip over the problems of a legally blind guy getting around town on a weekend without his normal chauffeur. [Just thank George and Martha for me.] The lighting conditions were unpleasant with minimal fluorescents in a dark gym. Two of the referee tables had ghastly glowing panels in front. There were three mats laid side-by-side, so there were three matches going on at any [...]
