Last weekend, the Chapel Hill News sent me to shoot a local family event. Carrboro Parks & Rec organizes an annual parent-child basketball skills contest. This year’s event took place last Saturday at a local middle school. The gum was a bit dark, but I brought some flashes and took my time. I stayed for about two and a half hours, giving me time to set up some acceptable light. The paper printed three of the photos with the article, chapelhillnews.com | Parent-Child Challenge. The first image (top right here) relies on my off-camera flash on a stand to camera left, either via optical slave or by the wireless trigger. I spotted the second (on left) far from the light stand, so tried different variations with an without my on-board SB-400. The flash does not work well from a distance, so I think this was with a very slow shutter speed and a prayer for a steady hand. The last (lower right here) away from the light stand, but there was better light near the entryway to the gym. I used different commendations of an-board SB-400 Nd my Vivitar on a stand. The best light came from both flashes simultaneously [...]

For every assignment that I shoot for the newspaper, I submit a series of pictures so the editors can choose what fits their needs the best. I always submit to many. For my recent assignment shoot the basketball game, I submitted seven though they only asked for five. I have a difficult time deciding which shots best capture spirit of the thing usually I have to narrow the field at least 200 pictures. From the seven pictures and submitted that weekend, the paper only ran one. I posted that picture that Sunday. I also posted a few other outtakes from that shoot that weekend. The photos here are the six shots rejected by the editors. I thought the image above did a reasonable job of capturing the feel of the game. The Wildcats won handily and held the lead from the beginning of the game. In this shot, we see a single Wildcat shooting over the head of four Falcons. The four Falcons can only turn and stare as the Wildcats score again. There is a lot of action in the shot, probably too much. I thought this image was interesting because it shows one of the key Chapel Hill [...]

I still have not figured out which of my two lenses is best for shooting basketball games. I have now shot two b-ball assignments, a game last November and one this past week. I have used both of my lense, changing them hurriedly every fifteen minutes or so. I have the two most basic Nikon lenses for the D40x, the Nikon 55-200mm f4-5.6G ED AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens and the kit lens, the Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens. The wider lens is better when the player are under the net, but not so good at any distance. As you can see here, the wider lens requires too much cropping. Cropped images have too much grain at high ISOs in these dim conditions. With the wide lens, it is also difficult to capture the emotional moments. You may want to catch that close up, but you can not get on the court. The longer lens gets action that is further away. With this lens, there is less need to crop the image later. On the filp side, some of the action is almost always cut off in the frame. Also, with one strobe, I often find [...]

While shooting the women’s basketball game last week (see Wildcats v. Falcons in the Paper), I took of few pictures of the cheerleading squads. Despite not having thrown enough light their way, several shots came out reasonably well. This one above is the best of the cheerleader series. It is popular on Flickr as well, though possibly not for the same reasons. I wish I had more separation in the top half, but the light works for the bottom havlf of the imae. Ther is good color contrast and vertical and horizontal lines that catch the eye. The dark uniforms do not stand out well in this shot against the dark panel on the wall. The cluttered backgroud does not help here either. I kept swiveling the light stand in the second half, hoping to get this shot right. It proved to difficult to adjust the lighting for the cheering squad in the stands and still have it back when the ball returned to the near half of the court. I will return to this puzzle in a later post. This final image is my second favorite cheer photo. There is something about the Faclon squad’s unifrom that created some [...]

This morning, the Chapel Hill News published another of my photos. This shot is part of the story, Wildcats make the grade, from the basketball game shoot that I have previously mentioned. Here Wildcat Hannah Elledge (#12) goes up for a layup in the first half of the game. I had the flash, my Vivirar, set up on a stand to my left, near the corner of the court. It was early in the game and I was still playing with the light levels. I think that the flash is overpowering the ambient light levels a bit too much her, but the players are getting that separation from the background that makes a good shot. It’s time to get a second off-camera flash so I can even out the light a bit better. There will be more posts on this shoot this week. I have some interesting photos of the cheerleaders. Besides the game photos that were posted yesterday, I have a few more to post. I will also address a few technical issues that this shoot brought up for me. If you find this post useful or interesting, please consider buying me a cup of coffee.Related Posts:Wildcats Vs.
As I mentioned a couple of days ago, I shot a local high school women’s basketball game last night. The assignment, for the Chapel Hill News, was to shoot the East Chapel Hill Women Wildcats’ basketball game at Jordan High on 2/6/09. ECH won easily, taking them one step closer to the league championship. The editors have the best shots from the day. Once they put the paper out, I will post those shots up here. In the meanwhile, I have a few outtakes. I shot an ECH men’s b-ball game for the News just before Thanksgiving. I have learned a few lessons, but have just barely scratched the surface. In the image above, the Jordan High Falcons honor the national anthem prior to the start of the game. Fortunately for this shot, though the assignment was to shoot the other team, I had set my Vivitar 285HV on stand at the corner by the stands, which gave me enough light in the right area to get this shot. Despite the fact that luck had me in the right area to catch this moment, experience with this type of assignment would have put me in the right place as well. [...]

I took this picture a few years ago, during the Durham Bulls’ 8-3 loss to the Columbus Clippers on 8/1/2007. I believe that this was my first trip to the DBAP – the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. These Bulls, ours not Chicagos’s, are currently the Triple A team for the Tampa Bay Rays. The park is nice and small, tickets are affordable and the location is in the newly redeveloped American Historic Tobaco District. We went a few times that summer and enjoyed ourselves. I submitted this photo, for the heck of it, to the local paper. A few weeks later it was published in the Chapel Hill News for “Your Best Sports Shot” on September 5th, 2007. [Note: My name is spelled incorrectly as Tom instead of Tim.] I had another shot, called Game Over, from that game published as well.
