Spotted on CNET, Ray Kurzweil tries to build a better e-reader. His latest project, Blio, is an effort to improve the emerging electronic book field with software that turns e-books into more than just a digital copy of the print edition. Blio, which is due out next month, is software that combines a full-color digital book with the ability to add Web content, video, and professionally narrated audiobooks. I like the idea of integrating audiobooks with e-books. So does my wife. Occassionally we will listen to audiobooks together, but she will also but the Kindle edition to read along. I have not tried this yet, but I have not found a great e-book reader yet. Holding my iPod Touch up to my face (as I need to get very close) for long periods of time is less than enticing. I can image running Blio, which would allow this, on a new iPad with a very large font size and relazing when reading and listening. Blio will offer text-t0-speech, but that has run into trouble with publishers on the new Kindle. Audible.com, a major online audio book distributor, ought to get involved. It would make for a great fit. The software [...]

Back in March of 2006, I contacted the author of an economics book that I was interested in reading. This was part of a personal campaign to encourage authors to produce audio editions of their books, blogged here. The author graciously responded, offering to bring the subject up with his publisher. I have heard from other authors that this is where the difficulties lie. Authors do not control whether an audio version is recorded. This depends on the legal status of the audio and digital rights, on the publisher’s whim and on the perceived demand. Despite the challenges, a request to the publisher from the author carries a lot more weight than one from me. There was not further communication from the author, so I assumed that this suggestions had languished with so many others. Out of the blue, the book, In Defense of Globalization by Jagdish Bhagwati, appeared recently on Audible.com with no fanfare. I noted it only by keeping my eye on the ‘Just Added’ list of new books released on Audible.com. Thank you, Professor Bhagwati. I hope other follow in your footsteps.
One of my favorite new authors is Joe Abercrombie. A few year ago, he published The First Law trilogy, a dark fantasy series, followed recently by Best Served Cold, a novel set I’m the First Law world. I picked up the first nook in the trilogy a few years ago in paperback and was immediately hooked. I do not read many books in print (though lots in audio), so this was a big deal for me. As I wrote earlier, a while back, I contacted the author via his web site to suggest audio versions of his books. Abercrombie responded and followed up the request, but met with the usual red tape faced by authors. The decision to produce an audio version lies more with the publishers, though, but Abercrombie put in a request. A few months ago, I heard the audio version was en route. Just a few days ago, Best Served Cold, Abercrombie’s latest, arrived on Audible.com’s virtual shelves. Yeah! Now I can finish reading it. I have the Kindle edition, but have not gotten past the first few chapters. With the Kindle app on my iPod (set to the light-on-dark color scheme and to the giant font [...]

The new iPhone update has moved the audio book playback speed controls. In the earlier versions, these controls were hidden away in the Music panel of the Settings App. This was terribly unintuitive as I noted in this post, Variable Speed Playback on the iPhone. Whenever I shared my iPod Touch with my wife, I would inevitably get a call about how to fix the speed. Now, Apple has redesigned the scrubber panel that drops down from the top when you tap on the music playback screen. In addition to the slide bar that allows you to more accurately move a particular spot in a song or book chapter, there are trhee new buttons. From Apple’s Podcast and Audiobook Controls page From the Now Playing screen, tap the cover. The email, 30-second repeat, and playback speed controls appear along with the scrubber bar. You can see elapsed time, remaining time, and the episode or chapter number. The quick rewind button and the playback speed controls are long overdo improvements. I love the quick rewind on my TiVo and have missed that capability on the iPod Touch. I am often interrupted when listening to books, especially when out walking the dogs, [...]

It has been a while since I have posted about my campaign for more unabridged audiobooks. I have not abandoned my quest, but I have not made much progress either. I did hear back this week from one of my favorite new fantasy authors, Joe Abercrombie, about the bogged down negotiations for the audio rights to his works. About a year or so ago, I picked up The Blade Itself, Abercrombie’s first book and the first of his First Law trilogy. I am not sure why I picked it up. The title, the cover, the back cover spiel, the first few pages? Something grabbed me about it and overcame my reluctance to struggle with my reading glasses. As soon I had returned home, I was hooked. Since Abercrombie is English, his books come out there first, followed by as much as a year later here. By the time I finished the first book of this trilogy, I was jonesing for the next. I hooked a British friend on the series just to get him to import the next two as they came out on that side of the pond. Now with the coming of his new novel, Best Served Cold, [...]

As you probably heard, this week Apple released its new Shiffie. The key new accessibility feature is VoiceOver. Introducing VoiceOver. Musically speaking, the new iPod shuffle is brilliant, thanks to an exciting new feature called VoiceOver. Say you’re listening to a song and want to know the title or the artist. With the press of a button, VoiceOver tells you as the music dips down. It even announces the names of your playlists. And when your battery needs charging, VoiceOver tells you that, too. Practically speaking, you press a button on the headphone cord to prompt the iPod to talk to you. Different cues will give you title and artist or battery level or playlist information. All very useful and all very overdue. Between last year’s nano and this month’s Shuffle, Apple is well on its way to bringing an audio interface to its mobile devices. Before recommending this to all the visually impaired music lovers out there, I have one concern that I have not seen addressed in the reviews so far. My primary reason for my iPod is to listen to books. Many visually impaired users offer audiobooks as a main reason for having iPods and other MP3 [...]

The NY Times, along with every other news source, is reporting on the new version of Amazon’s e-book reader, the Kindle.Buried among all the other changes is one important accessibility feature: text-to-speech. According to the Times: Giving Voice to the Kindle: The Kindle 2 also has text-to-speech built in. “Any book, blog, magazine or personal document can be read aloud,” Mr. Bezos said. Users can switch between reading text and hearing it read by a fairly computerized voice. “It’s very easy to go back and forth between reading and listening,” Mr. Bezos said I have tested out the first version, as my wife has the Kindle 1.0. With its adjustable font size set to the maximum, I can read the text fairly easily with my low vision reading glasses. I look forward to testing out the new text-to-speech feature when I find someone with the new version. The new Kindle’s text-to-speech offers two voices, male and female, and does not offer variable speed playback. I really like the variable spped playback on the iPod, though I wish it had more than three settings.
I have had my first success with my grass root campaign for more unabridged audio. I received an email this week from Ron Rosenbaum, the author of Explaining Hitler. I read this book a few years ago on cassette, but could not find it on Audible.com. I emailed Mr. Rosenbaum, who was kind enough to see that his book will be published on Audible. From the email: It took a while but we’ve made arrangements for books on tape to make the Hitler book available on audible.com. I’m not sure when it will become available (just signed the paperwork) but thought I’d let you know it’s happening. Best, ron rosenbaum Thank you, Mr. Rosenbaum. I am thrilled to hear you have enjoying our selection of titles. We are in the process of renegotiating our contract with Audible and I’m sure we will continue to release our titles available for download with Audible. We do not have any current plans to release another William Gibson novel on audio, but will keep your suggestion in mind and certainly appreciate your input.
