Last weekend, the Chapel Hill News sent me to shoot a local family event. Carrboro Parks & Rec organizes an annual parent-child basketball skills contest. This year’s event took place last Saturday at a local middle school. The gum was a bit dark, but I brought some flashes and took my time. I stayed for about two and a half hours, giving me time to set up some acceptable light. The paper printed three of the photos with the article, chapelhillnews.com | Parent-Child Challenge. The first image (top right here) relies on my off-camera flash on a stand to camera left, either via optical slave or by the wireless trigger. I spotted the second (on left) far from the light stand, so tried different variations with an without my on-board SB-400. The flash does not work well from a distance, so I think this was with a very slow shutter speed and a prayer for a steady hand. The last (lower right here) away from the light stand, but there was better light near the entryway to the gym. I used different commendations of an-board SB-400 Nd my Vivitar on a stand. The best light came from both flashes simultaneously [...]

My local paper, theChapel Hill News, ran a very nicely done story, Through a lens darkly, about me a few weeks ago. The reported had done the interview a while ago, so I did not know when to expect it. The day it ran, I brought the paper in only to toss it into the living room for later perusal. An hour later, an email arrived congratulating me. I checked the paper again and found two of my images on the front page. Definitely a nice feeling. Legally blind photographer adigital pioneer Before he takes a single photograph, Tim O’Brien circles the periphery of the outdoor hockey rink. “I need to familiarize myself with the environment and my subject,” he said. “I’m using all the available information — from memories, to sounds, to the reactions of others — to stitch an image together.” You would not know O’Brien is legally blind. He does not use a cane, dark glasses or a guide dog. Independent and determined, he moves as freely as possible. “Without a cane or other external indicators, my blindness is paradoxically invisible,” said O’Brien acknowledging for many it is hard to see he is blind without the accepted [...]

Wired.com interviewed me for an article running now: Blind Photographers Use Gadgets to Realize Artistic Vision. The story features three of us from Blind Photographers, with interview material and photoss. From the article: “Dejong is part of an online community called Blind Photographers, where similarly handicapped shutterbugs share their work and photography tips. Because blindness is variable from person to person, the shooters each develop a different methodology to suit their visual impairment, said Tim O’Brien, a member of the organization and a freelance newspaper photographer for Chapel Hill News.” I talked about about my eye condition and how it affects my photography: “Because of his handicap, O’Brien can see much better from his periphery than his center. So when he takes a photo, he first familiarizes himself with his surrounding (walking up and down every aisle in a grocery store, for example) to gather and memorize a visual. He calls it building a map in his head.” It is currecntly leading Wired and is up top at Digg.
I had a nice selection of four shots in last week’s paper, cCLIFF’S CARVES OUT A CHAMPIONSHIP. I had had a tough time shooting the previous week’s playoff game (see Summer Softball Playoffs) as the game started late. This time around, they played a double header and I had good tlight for the first game. Amred with good light and good karma, I came home with some good photos. PHOTOS BY TIM O’BRIEN Above, Cliff’s Meat Market’s Lucy Stephenson swings for the fence early in the first game of the hard-fought double-header Carrboro Co-Rec softball finals against Chapel Hill Air at Hank Anderson Park on Tuesday. Below, Chapel Hill Air’s Ed Sawyer takes a good cut during the first game. Cliff’s Meat Market went on to win both games to take the championship in the Carrboro Parks and Recreation league. Above was the lead photo for the story, catching a good hack at the ball early in the game. The photo below was cropped to the top half to catch the pitcher’s toss. Here I caught another swing with some decent movement of the ball. I like this shot, but it ended up as a tiny shot on the front [...]

A couple of weeks ago, I shot a local summer softball playoff game. A pair of images from the shoot made it to the paper in Five down, two left in Carrboro Co-Rec. Above, high fives and congratulations end the night after Cliff’s Meat Market won 13-12 over the Chapel Hill Realty Group at Carrboro’s Hank Anderson Park. Cliff”s hard-fought wins over Milltown and CHRG on Thursday sends it into the final. Below, CHRG’s Dave Shaw jumps on a pitch Thursday night. The game had a late start shortly after 8PM. So the light was poor from the start and just got worse. As usual it took me some time to get into the zone, wasting valuable light. Before I knew it, I was shooting at ISO 1600 and a shutter spped slower than 1/160th of a second. This makes taking action shots tough. Too slow to catch action, too slow to stop camera shake. Fortunately, I learned a bit about Lightroom’s grain reduction controls, though these did little more than take the edge off. I ended up get more decent shots of the team in grey, Cliff’s Meat Market. Unfortunately, Cliff’s won, meaning they would move on to the [...]

I have had the good fortune to be featured on Eco: On Blindness and the Arts, Simon Hayhoe’s project to bridge academia and the arts around the issue of blindness. The site features a Flash-based image gallery featuring blind artists and related exhibits , projects and institutions. [Because it is Flash-based, I can't link directly to my gallery and it is not very accessible.] ECO was founded as an on-line knowledge base in 2006, in order to provide research resources, information and a gallery about blindness in the arts. It has now expanded, however, to include information about blindness in information technology and computing as well. Its aim is to introduce these subjects as fields of study. ECO is a webpage for educators and practitioners of the arts or information technology, or simply people who have an intellectual interest in touch arts, computer programming, IT, access or disability. It is an electronic resource to introduce you to the ideas behind this topic. It is also the beginnings of an on-line library on this subject. The site offers both links to useful resources and a ton of related academic articles. Thanks, Simon! If you find this post useful or interesting, please [...]

A few weeks ago, I spent the evening shooting a youth baseball game for the paper. The story was highlighting a new regional league. Three images accompanied Players find H.E.C.C. of a success. From the article: Carrboro Recreation and Parks is taking that optimistic approach to its latest cooperative venture, the Hillsborough-East Chatham-Carrboro (H.E.C.C.) Baseball League, comprising 13-15-year-old players from two Hillsborough Youth Athletic League teams; three East Chatham baseball teams; and two Carrboro Recreation and Parks squads, the Red Sox and Braves. I sat behind home plate for a good while hoping to get this shot. I got the ball in this one, but the autofocus was not my friend. I learned a trick aftwerwards to deal with this and will post on it later. I spent too much time shooting batters and pitches, but managed to get a few action shots. Another action shot: I have a few other shots that I like. I will post these outtakes and discuss some of the challenges in a later post If you find this post useful or interesting, please consider buying me a cup of coffee.Related Posts:slideshow: HECC Baseballtim in print| Summer Softball Championshiptim in print | Summer Softball Playoffstim [...]

A couple of weeks ago, I shot a youth triathlon for the paper. Three photos accompanied the story, Swim for Smiles Triathlon chases away the rain. It was a fun shoot, though alternately wet and warm. From the article: The event was the first of three planned this summer for the Swim for Smiles Foundation, a Chapel Hill-based charity. The group holds fun, youth-oriented, swimming-related events to raise money for the North Carolina Children’s Hospital. This was one of the last shots I took. I finally got into a good rhythm and found a good spot to catch the last uphill of the running segment for the younger kids on the short course. I just has to catch a photogenic kid with identifiable numbers. Shooting the pool was tricky. There was no easy way to know whom I was shooting. I had to look for interesting group shots. Splashes are also hard to make that cool, especially for a community paper looking for faces. This one showed a bit of the crowd and the swimmers had a good geometry. I don’t know why parents put kids under ten in triathlons, but they make for great photos! I have a ton of [...]
