I completed my first race today. 4 kilometers in 26 minutes! Thanks to my wife, I have some images from the race. Check out some more photos (of me) from the race here. The Pumpkin Run is a 4K race through a remote and scenic trail near Horace Williams Airport in Chapel Hill. The course has rolling hills and is challenging. Read what Chapel Hill News has to say about the race. The race was a lot of fun, with tons of families running together (though that sounds more organized than the actual chaos of kids running pell-mell everywhere). It felt could to meet this goal; completing a short race without killing or otherwise injuring myself. I am also doing the No Boundaries running clinic out of our local Fleet Feet running store in Carrboro. The clinic will culminate in a 5k race here in Chapel Hill, the Southern Village 5k, in mid December. If you have been thinking about trying it out, this is a great way to test LR without shelling out big bucks. I am downloading it now, so have not yet tested it, but it is supposed to include flickr integration (which I assume is an easy upload feature). You can find the LR 3 beta here.
NYTimes.com has a great new blog, the Lens Blog, which deals with “Photojournalism – Photography, Video and Visual Journalism Archives”. It has recently done a great series on the famous Tianeman Square reporting. Lens is the photojournalism blog of The New York Times, presenting the finest and most interesting visual and multimedia reporting — photographs, videos and slide shows. A showcase for Times photographers, it also seeks to highlight the best work of other newspapers, magazines and news and picture agencies; in print, in books, in galleries, in museums and on the Web. And it will draw on The Times’s own pictorial archive, numbering in the millions of images and going back to the early 20th century. Check it ou.
I ran across a great article, Behind the Scenes: Tank Man of Tiananmen via Lens Blog @ NYTimes.com, detailing the stories behind the famous shot from Tiananmen Square. The article marks the twentieth anniversary of the crackdown and the publication of those images. Twenty years ago, on June 5, 1989, following weeks of massive protests in Beijing, resulting in the deaths of hundreds, a lone man stepped in front of a column of tanks rumbling past Tiananmen Square. The moment instantly became a symbol of the protests as well as a symbol against oppression worldwide — an anonymous act of defiance seared into our collective consciousnesses. The story includes both the four famous photos and blurbs from the photographers who took these iconic images, so it is well worth checking out. If you find this post useful or interesting, please consider buying me a cup of coffee.Related Posts:Lens Blog @ NYTimes.comSlashdot | Bionic Eye Gives Blind Man SightBlind Photographers: The New York Times on Kurt Weston and Blind PhotographyThe Work of Fashion Photographer Richard Avedon – NYTimes.comTime for a Fast Prime Lens?

As I noted when I Bought My First iPhone App, there is no built-in way to totate images on the iPhone. Apple probably never thought of it because rotating images on the iPhone makes them quite small. It is both better and simpler just to swivel the iPhone itself depending on whether the image is landscape or portrait. On the other hand, what if you want to insert the image into an email or, in my case, a blog post? Landscape images come out sideways. Initially, to get around this, I needed to download the image onto your computer and rotate it there. What a pain! Managing all those downloaded images and then getting them onto the blog or into email is just unnecessary. There is a $0.99 app on the iPhone that does this one thing and does it well. It rotates images. Called Photo Rotate, this well-named app from Andrew Bednarz does an elegant job. The interface is simple and well laid out. In the current release, you can choose both clockwise and counterclockwise rotation as well as horizontal or vertical flips. Although the font could be a bit bigger, the light-on-dark color scheme and the simple, uncluttered [...]

A while back I posted a tip about adding IDs to the iPhone wallpaper. This tip involved adding your contact info manually using an image editing software on your desktop. Too tricky for most, including me. Fortunately, it turns out that ther is an easier way to do this. There are to similar apps, with sacly similar names, that will add your contact info to images directly on your iPhone. If Found, Please… If Found, Please… is a cool little free app. From the developers at Polka: Create a message and contact information on your own personal wallpaper in case your phone is lost. Best part is the information is viewable even if the phone is locked. Hopefully the nice person that finds it will contact you and arrange its safe return! The app puts a little text box and an exclamation mark at the bottom of the image you would like to be your iPhone wallpaper. Once saved, you hop over to the Photo library and set the new image as your wallpaper. If Found If Found is quite similar.
Ken Rockwell has a great tip on How to add your ID to your iPhone and iPod Touch. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could have your contact information pop up every time your iPhone or iPod touch turns on, so that if you lost it, you would get it back? The tip is a little tricky. Basically, you take your home screen image and add your contact info as a layer in Photoshop. Still, it is a good idea.
I crossed an iPhone milestone today and paid for my first iPhone app today. Up until now, I have used only free apps in addition to the default ones. But I encountered an issue that could be solved easily only by a $1.99 app. So I bought it. And I did it through iTunes on my desktop, rather than through the built-in App Store. I have been experimenting with drafting my iPhone app reviews directly on the iPod Touch. The issue has been the extra steps involved moving screenshots from the Touch to the computer and then to the blog. Using WordPresses dedicated iPhone app, WordPress for iPhone, I can write a first draft of the post and attach a screenshot directly from the photo library. The problem is that there is no free way (that I can find) to rotate images on the iPhone. Screenshots taken in landscape mode end up sideways. iPhone: Photo Rotate does one and only one thing for $1.99. It rotates images. Problem solved. iPhone: Photo Rotate is available on the iPhone or through the iTunes App Store. Read more iPhone accessibility reviews here.
