The Chapel Hill News printed two of my photos yesterday with the story, Youth tap dance company prepares for season finale. As I talked about in an earlier post, Tap Dance Outtakes, a couple Saturdays ago, I shot a tap dance rehearsal. A difficult shoot, but a lot of fun. The assignment was to catch the preparation for North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble‘s (NCYTE) upcoming show, Good Vibrations, this weekend in Durham. From the lead photo’s caption:
Feet fly during a recent rehearsal by the North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble. The group will perform in Durham this weekend.
I really like the leas shot, which made the front page. I was trying to get a more creative shot. The safe shots just were not coming out as I had wanted. With the tight space, street clothes, difficult lighting hurdles and equipment limitations, I hoped that trying to catch a line of tap shoes would pay off. I think it did.
The second shot, on the inside page, was a small black and white of the in sync shot above. I took this shot close to the end of rehearsal. I think I was getting closer to finding a group shot with decent light, a clean background and a reasonably dense grouping of dancers.
There are a number of outtakes from the shoot. I posted a few the other day in Tap Dance Outtakes. I have a few more photos from the day, submitted but not accepted by the paper.
There were three large windows behind the dancers, making straight on shots impossible.
These are the dancers whose shoes were highlighted in the lead shot.
Catching dance moves in a way that communicates dancing rather than random people in wierd poses is not so easy.
Here’s most of the dance ensemble listening to some instructions.
Come to see the show this weekend. It should be fun.
