I shot the Dixie Rock 20 indoor climbing event this past weekend here in Chapel Hill. From the two day event, which included both amateur and USAC competitions, I was there for a few hours at lunchtime, catching a lot of the locals. These two shots from the assignment made into the paper with this article: Dixie Rock celebrates 20 years and climbing.
For this lead shot, it dawned on me after an hour or so that a group, wide-angle shot would work well. All I needed was to find a section of the wall with multiple climbers. Hopefully, this gives the sense of action and competition I was looking for.
This shot, of a local climber, was one of a number of individuals I shot that day. With dim gymnasium lighting and no good spot for my off-0amera flash, lighting was a bit tricky. Fortunately, this climber was both photogenic and wearing good colors ( that highlight her face).
More details and outtakes tomorrow!
