On Saturday, I spent an hour or so on UNC’s Hooker Field shooting the intramural kickball tournament. We should see the article tomorrow with the accompanying photos.
The day was beautiful for the tournament with bright sunny skies and warm weather. I shot it in the early/mid afternoon, catching some pretty strong shadows. I thought about setting up an off camera flash, but was not sure how to set it up to fill properly with the action all over the place. In the first round of playoffs, there were four games going on, so I scouted for best lighting and tried to get some basic ‘sure’ shots.
The light was strong, so I shot at ISO 100 and a shutter speed above 250. I used shutter spped priority, so I could focus on the action rather than the camera. I seitched from my longer to my shorter lens over the day to try to mix it up a bit.
From there, I tried to get good shots of students kicking the ball. It was tough as home plate was only a reference point for kicking. Too much movement to get a good zoom in shot. Getting the timing right was tricky and making sure that faces were visible and well lit was not easy either.
Captioning was the most difficult. I had to asses image quality from the LCD to guess whether or not captioning info was worth getting . It was a risk to take the time to get captions as I might miss a good shot. However, I can’t see the LCD too well (especially in bright daylight) even with my reading glasses and the camera zoomed in fully. So I spent valuable time getting caption info for the wrong shotss and not getting the info for what turned out to be good shots! Argh. I don’t see a great solution to this. I can’t carpet bomb and get caption info for every possible subject all the time. I can do this at more organized sporting events as coaches or others will have rosters and players are numbered. No luck here. Oh well. One option might be to pick a few likely suspect and follow them until I get a good shot of them. Hmmm…
Check back tomorrow for more photos and a link to the article!
