As I mentioned recently in Combine Line Jump, I did an assignment for the paper last Friday shooting a football prep session for the National Underclassmen Combine at East Chapel Hill High. The combine is a way for high school football players to prep for college recruitment. The shoot has not made it into the paper yet and is likely past its sell-by date.
In the previous post, I detailed a bit of my attempts to light the session with my Viivitar. Before my lighting experiments, I used the sunset t to try to get some interesting shots using available light. I had to rely a bit on Lightroom graduated filter tool to try and recover some of the harsh shadows, especially in the portrait on the right. I should have found some way to throw the light from my flash, but it was too tricky for me.
Generally, the coaches had the athletes facing away from the sun, throwing some long and dark shadows. I took some longer shots from the stands to get see the shadows. This made for some nice lines, but the shots feel a bit distant.
I got closer to the action with my wider lens to get a more personal feeling in the images.
The players did their best to hide from the camera, looking down or away.
I ended up playing too much with the shadows and the lines that they create, rather than paying attention to the players themselves.
But football offers lots of patterns to exploit.
Either way, here is the slide show of all the shots from the day.
