Center hosts grand (re)opening Saturday

RANDY YOUNG – Recreation:Renovations and expansion at Triangle SportsPlex highlight new features for fitness Published: Mar. 18, 2009 12:30 AM | Full story

The assignment was to get a spread of a local sports center with its pools, ice rink and new fitness areas. I spent a few hour and took a zillion shots, but it all came down to these three.

In this shot, I tried to capture the view from the new spin class area with all the new machines.I spotted one of the employees at the Sporsplex pushing all the spin machines together against the window and thought that might mike a shot.

I only had the one off-camera flash in a fairly dimly lit are, so I could not figure a way to get rid of the shadows. I put a shoot through on the flash, upped the power and set it far back to mellow the shadows. I then stood on a chair to get the right angle. The ceilings were open and black and the walls an unflattering brown, so no bounce for me.

It ain’t perfect, but it got the job done.

Kelly is the camera-shy, but very photogenic, membership director who landed the task of babysitting me for my shoot. My goal her was to show off the hardwood floor and ice-rink view from the new exercise room with Kelly giving the Sportsplex a friendly face. The room was not yet open to the public, so it was shoes off. I tried to keep my light stand at the door to save the floor, but that made things a bit restrictive.

In hindsight, I would do this a bit differently. I would find something to put under the stand’s feet to get it closer, use a bounce card of some kind on the other side of Kelly’s face to soften the shadow a bit and I would get in closer. Still, this is my favorite shot of the three that made it.

This shot is meant to showcase the family friendly pool area. I liked the colorful toys and the lines they and the rope make. So I made them the focues.and blurred out the folks a bit.

More outtakes to follow.
