For the Fourth of July this year, we went to see the reenactment at Gettysburg. I have some family in one of the regiments from Massachusetts, so we used that as an excuse. Since coming to North Carolina, I have done some reading and such about the Civil War. Ken Burns did his usually wonderful job with his documentary on the subject partly based on the equally aptly named three-volume history by Shelby Foote. But words on a page and even images on a screen still leave history at a distance. This was as colse to being there as I would ever wish to be.
