I brought my camera a number of years ago to my cousin’s college graduation. I did not come home with many decent photos, so I played with a few. I applied some crazy preset effect to a poorly exposed shot of my cousin in front of his Dartmouth fraternity house. This, as you can guess, is the result. There is something about it I like. It seems to capture the spirit of the day, rather than the facts.
A funny story led me to this day. My mother and his father (my uncle) had not spoken since our grandfather had passed away when he was five or so. His brother wanted to invite me to his wedding the year before this image was shot, but did not know how to find me. He knew where I had gone to college, but the alumni office could not release by personal details. They did, however, forward me a message from him with their apologies if I were not his cousin. Unfortunately, this ended up in y spam folder. I decided to clear out my spam folder for no good reason while visiting my wife’s family for a week about two months before the wedding. I chanced upon the message from the alumni office and something about it grabbed my attention, so I read it. Eight weeks later, more or less, we were at the wedding in Indianapolis and the next summer I went to his brother’s graduation. It’s a funny old world.
